  Hantavirus Disease
(Advanced Education) Hantavirus disease is a rare, but potentially fatal infection spread by deer mice and possibly by other rodents. It is transmitted to people when they inhale airborne particles contaminated by the saliva or excretions of infected rodents. Controlling rodents, identifying sources of infection, cleaning buildings and worksites and minimizing exposures will reduce the risk of infection. Flu-like or pneumonia-like symptoms following potential exposures to sources of infection should be promptly reported to a doctor for treatment.

  Lead Poisoning in Radiator Repair Shops
(Advanced Education) Workers in radiator repair shops can be exposed to unsafe amounts of lead. Fumes from soldering often contain more lead than the legal limit. When workers are tested, the amount of lead in their blood is sometimes higher than is safe.

  Managing Shiftwork

Shiftworkers have irregular patterns of eating, sleeping, working and socializing that may lead to health and social problems. Shiftwork can also reduce performance and attentiveness.   Poor Risk Assessment Contributes to Accident
(Advanced Education) Part XXII of The Occupational Health and Safety Regulations, 1996 requires employers to ensure workers are trained in the safe use and handling of chemical substances and controlled products that are being used in the workplace.
  Preventing Electrocution on the Farm
(Advanced Education) Every year farmers, family members, hired hands, or neighbours just ‘helping out' are seriously injured or killed by contact with overhead power lines. Saskatchewan's Occupational Health and Safety Act and Regulations set out the responsibilities and duties of employers, owners, the self-employed, contractors and suppliers in establishing and maintaining safe and healthy working conditions. It also gives workers the right to refuse unusually dangerous work. Farms are not exempt from the Act.

  Radon
(Advanced Education) Radon is a radioactive gas that occurs naturally in the environment. It comes from the natural breakdown of uranium in soils and rocks. In the open air, the amount of radon gas is very small and does not pose a health risk. However, in some confined spaces like basements and underground mines, radon can accumulate to relatively high levels and become a health hazard.
