Economics of Commercial Fertilizer for Hay and Pasture Calculator

The Economics of Commercial Fertilizer for Hay and Pasture calculates the cost and return of fertilizing hay and pasture based on average fertilizer efficiency and costs in Saskatchewan. The additional yield and subsequent economics of fertilizing tame forage will depend on a number of factors including timeliness of precipitation, soil moisture, current soil fertility level, rate and type of fertilizer applied, time of application, stand condition and harvest efficiency. Nitrogen Use Efficiency (NUE) is defined as the dry matter production per unit of nitrogen applied to the soil. Research has shown typical forage crops will recover about 20 to 25 per cent of the nitrogen when it is applied as inorganic fertilizer. This results in 20 to 35 pounds of additional dry matter produced per pound of nitrogen applied.

The calculators below are provided "as is" in excel spreadsheets to assist producers in planning for the future.
